The Skin Care Industry: Ironing Out the Wrinkles
Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and yet we bombard it, knowingly and unknowingly, with stuff that can do us a lot of harm. In the effort to look and feel our best, we smear unsafe gunk on our face and body–creams and lotions that (like a lot of pharmaceutical drugs) mask the symptoms, while contributing to the overall problem. In addition to masking symptoms, most of the popular skin care products are exceptionally costly. We’d like to explore some of what we have discovered with you.
As our world population ages, more and more people are seeking solutions. Is it possible to look younger? To feel better? To live longer?
A recent discovery shows it is.
But before we get to that part of the story, let’s first talk about some of the ingredients that got us into the mess of dangerous skin care. We’ll just mention a few, along with what they’re used for, and why they are a problem for our overall well-being:
INGREDIENTS USED FOR
1. Phthalates, DEP, DBP, Fragrance Hold color and scents
2. Parabens Preservative (antibacterial, antifungus)
3. Sodium Lauryl/ Laureth Sulfate Surfactant, Emulsifier, Detergent (lather)
4. Polyethylene Glycol (PEG) Thickening, cleansing, Surfactant
5. Propylene Glycol Conditioning
6. MEA, DEA, TEA (__ethanolamine) Emulsifiers, Foaming Agents, adjust pH
7. Hydantoin, Urea Preservative
8. Colors, Pigments Coloring
9. Chemical Sunscreens Block UVB rays
On the surface (forgive the pun), these seem innocuous enough. Look on the ingredients list for nearly every soap, shampoo, make up, and lotion. You’ll have a tough time finding something without one or more of these ingredients.
Now let’s have a look at what these ingredients do:
Phthalates, DEP, DBP and Fragrance: are endocrine disruptors (alter genital development)
Parabens: have hormone disrupting effects (mimic estrogen), and are possibly a breast cancer risk.
Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfate: are a 1,4-Dioxane contaminant that causes cancer, neurotoxicity, and reproductive toxicity
Polyethylene Glycol (PEG): opens pores so toxins enter more readily, causes allergic reactions, and is a 1,4-Dioxane contaminant that causes cancer
Propylene Glycol: is an irritant that causes dermatitis and allergies
MEA, DEA, TEA (___ethanolamine): cause allergic reactions and eye irritations, dryness of skin, and contain cancer-causing nitrates
Hydantoin, Urea: release formaldehyde and cause allergic dermatitis
Colors, Pigments: contribute to skin sensitivity and irritation, cancer causing
Chemical Sunscreens: endocrine disruptors; cause free radicals
High Costs, Little to Show for Them
We looked at the leading skin care products that are sold in the United States today. It is very difficult to locate the ingredients list for most of the skin care products! But we found info on three of the top four. Number one costs $210.40 for one ounce. Number two costs $355.35 for 1 1/2 ounces. Number 4 costs $128.00 for 3 1/3 ounces.
Then we looked at a popular new skin care that comes in a night cream and day cream. The day cream wholesales at $80.00 for 30 ml, or one ounce. It retails for $110.00.
