Candida: Fun Song, Not So Fun Disease

A reader writes:

I am suffering from extreme diarrhea and itching due to candida. I am currently eating no sugar, taking Three Lac, eating yogurt. I am eating fruit. Is it contributing to my problem? What diet do you recommend for my current condition?

My response:

Extreme diarrhea and itching may be due to candida.  Assuming that is correct, these are my recommendations:

  1. No sugar and no fruit, as there is too much sugar in fruit.
  2. ThreeLac is an extremely potent probiotic; follow the guidelines it provides for maximum effectiveness.
  3. If the above is not yet helping, anti-fungals need to be used.
  • Herbals can be tried first, including caprylic acid, Pau D’Arco, and garlic
  • If the above doesn’t work, contact a physician who is familiar with Candida and can provide Diflucan and Nystatin by prescription

Chronic Candida (Yeast Infection)

 Due to a myriad of symptoms of I have been doing a lot of research on Chronic Candida. I did a “spit test” and have taken online questionnaire that have affirmed yeast is wreaking havoc in my body. It seems as though there is a lot of speculation and contradicting information about this “syndrome”. There is also a market of products that claim to be the cure-all. I understand that illuminating sugar and reducing yeast are huge prospects in treatment. I have an appointment with a physician next week however I’m curious to know the diagnosis process and I have questions about two products. I found a probiodic called Syntol. It claims to be safe and extremely effective in killing yeast. I also saw that the RX Diflucan will kill ! yeast. I am not sure if I should wait for my doctor to prescribe Diflican, or if I should start with this aggressive probiodic immediately to regain my life. In your holistic opinion which is safer and more effective?

Candida is a normal inhabitant of the gastrointestinal and vaginal tracts. However, when something like antibiotics interferes with the good bacteria that keep it under control, the Candida yeast has the ability to morph into a toxic form. This new organism is much harder to bring under control. It even has the ability to penetrate the bowel wall, get into the bloodstream, and go throughout the body. Sugar and yeast provide food and strengthen the organism.

Diagnosis is often made as you have done–a spit test and a questionnaire, both of which are fairly helpful. I use a special Candida blood test, not the typical antibody test which is about 80% inaccurate, to establish a diagnosis, because the treatment is aggressive and often long term. And if that is not the problem, it is a lot of work for nothing.

My treatment consists of diet restrictions: NO sugar, NO yeast, NO fruit, as there is too much sugar in the fruit. Probiotics are absolutely essential, which Syntol is. I can’t tell what the dosage of good bacteria is that that product has, although it does have a nice variety of subspecies. 

Take at least 10 to 25 billion (yes Billion) organisms daily. The next step is to try either herbal products that can help kill the Candida, like Pau D-Arco and caprylic, or medications like Nystatin and Diflucan, which require physician supervision and prescription. Much can be done at home, but if it is not sufficient, you will need to see a practitioner who is familiar with this sometimes challenging condition.

Candida, Itching, Fruit

If you are suffering from ‘extreme’ diarrhea and itching from Candida, then eating fruit is surely contributing to your symptoms. There is just too much sugar in the fruit. The Candida diet I put my patients on includes

  • NO sugar,
  • yeast, and
  • no fruit.

There are stricter guidelines that some people need to follow, but this is the starting point. Three Lac is the most effective probiotic on the market, so you probably do not need yogurt additionally (but it is fine, just so they did not flavor it with sugar). If those 2 things do not solve the problem, then the addition of natural substances like

  • Pau D’ Arco,
  • caprylic acid,
  • Horopito may be tried. I usually bypass those natural substances and use
  • Nystatin and
  • Diflucan

by prescription as the next step. If you have had the symptoms a long time, it may be difficult to get them under control.  But be patient and keep working at it.  You will improve.

Sweeteners, Yeast, and Dairy Products

I would like to know more about sweeteners, yeast, dairy products and why they would be something that should be taken away.

Yeast–Candida and other yeast organisms are natural inhabitants of the intestinal and vaginal tracts. The several pounds of healthy bacteria that we have in the gut keep the yeast under control.  When we take multiple antibiotics for any reason, the good bacteria in the gut diminish, thereby permitting the yeast to get stronger and morph into a more aggressive organism.

There are other reasons for this change to take place, such as a compromised immune system, but antibiotic use is the most common trigger.

  • Sugar,
  • fruit and
  • yeast (like in bread or beer)

feed the candida and make it stronger. The typical symptoms of vaginal yeast is itching, burning, and perhaps a discharge. This is often treated with local creams. The typical symptoms of intestinal candida are

  • gas,
  • bloating,
  • rectal itching, especially after eating sugar.

As candida gets stronger, it will invade the gut wall and spread through the bloodstream to the body. Now it becomes strong enough to release a toxin that will cause an endless array of symptoms–

  • headaches,
  • malaise,
  • tiredness and weakness,
  • muscle and joint aches,
  • chronic sinusitis (which is treated with more antibiotics), along with all the symptoms already mentioned.

As the gut gets more inflamed, it opens up space between the wall, permitting partially digested food to get in contact with the immune system, causing food allergies on top of everything else. This is called leaky gut. In the absence of any candida symptoms, yeast in breads and cooking will be well tolerated, and unless you are allergic to it, there would be no reason to remove it from your diet.

My daughter has vaginitis which has not gone away after several RX’s of antibiotics. What natural cures or supplements could help her?

One strong possibility for a vaginal problem is candida, or yeast, which is only made worse with each antibiotic. If that is the problem, the following is important:

1. Diet-since sugar feeds Candida, it has to be totally eliminated, including eating fruits. Also, yeast (like in bread) needs to be eliminated.

2. Probiotics need to be replenished.  Since the oral ingestion of probiotics may not reach the vaginal tract, a douche with 1 teaspoon powdered probiotics and 1 teaspoon powdered vitamin C (to acidify the solution) has proved very successful.

3. Herbals that are anti-fungal may also help-capryllic acid (not an herb but a saturated fat), Pau D’Arco, grapefruit seed extract (citricidal).

4.  The vaginal area can become irritated with the use of soap.  Just use clean, warm water to cleanse the area, and be gentle in cleansing.  Avoid bubble baths.

Sugar, the Great “Food” Deceiver

Our association with sugar often contains fond memories.  Little girls are described as “sugar and spice and everything nice.”  Most social events are associated with some kind of sugar exposure.   I remember when we were raising our children that one of the highlights for them and probably also for me was the parent-child date, when we went out to get the chocolate dipped ice cream cones.  Sugar and chocolate seem to relieve depression, or when we are down in the dumps we can get a little sugar high and that helps with the mood.  Incentives in school and family are often sweets.  Memories of Christmas stockings, Easter, Halloween are filled with sugar treats.
